The story of Paul Jennings is one that inspires us to think of all the other stories and lives affected by slavery during the 19th century. Even though Jennings was the first slave to write a memior detailing his life as a slave in the White House, he was certainly not the first slave to play a role in White House life.

This archive is a gathering of resources that serve to provide insights into the lives of Paul Jennings and the other slaves affiliated with the White House and the Washington D.C. region.

This collection was created as a project for English 541: The Rude Quarter Century at the University of Maine, Orono.

It is the sole intention of this collection that the information and resources included here are used for educational purposes only..
